Nice Jazz Festival 2023
Concert is over
Now in the fifth decade of his professional life, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: at the cutting edge of culture, technology, business and global music. As well as being recognised as a legendary pianist and composer, Herbie Hancock has been an integral part of all popular-music movements since the 1960s. He developed new approaches to his own recordings in the 1970s, with ground-breaking albums such as Headhunters, combining electric jazz with funk and rock in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music to this day. Rockit and Future Shock marked Herbie Hancock's foray into electronic-dance music and included several chart-topping hits. Over the years, Hancock has received an Academy Award for his film score Round Midnight and 14 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters, and two Grammy Awards in 2011 for the recently released collaboration album The Imagine Project. Many of his compositions, including "Canteloupe Island", "Maiden Voyage", "Watermelon Man" and "Chameleon", are modern standards that have had a profound impact on all styles of contemporary music. Herbie Hancock also enjoys a thriving career off the stage and outside of the recording studio. He is the creative president for jazz of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, as well as president of the Thelonious Monk Jazz Institute – the leading international organisation dedicated to the development of jazz performances and education around the world. Hancock is also one of the founders of the International Committee of Artists for Peace (ICAP) and was awarded the title Commander of Arts and Letters – an internationally esteemed award in the arts.
