Biography

Nduduzo Makhathini is both a jazzman and a shaman. He grew up in the lush, rugged hills of Umgungundlovu in South Africa, a peri-urban landscape where music and ritual practices were symbiotically linked. Born into a family of musicians, his love for music began at a very young age. The Church also played an important role in his interest and understanding of music. South African jazz legends were also real influences. A professor and researcher, Makhathini is head of the music department at the University of Fort Hare, in the Eastern Cape province. In Nice, he plays the repertoire “Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds”: a very spiritual jazz that has its source in South African music and is tinged with Coltranian colours.
